Journalist Imara Jones aspires to tell trans stories to the world. As the founder and CEO of TransLash Media, a nonprofit storytelling project, she aims to center the humanity of and lower the hostility against trans people via the power of journalism and personal narrative.

“It's my belief that ignorance against trans people — literally 9 out of 10 people say that they don't know someone who’s trans — is fertile ground for people who wish to do us harm,” she says. “And that the way for people to get to know us is through us telling our stories.”

For a long time, the only stories Jones saw about trans people were negative. But the Trump administration’s draconian anti-trans stances and the increase of violence towards trans folks became the catalyst that inspired Jones to take action.“I went around the country to show what it was like for me in my experience to be trans at that moment,” she says.

Reflecting back on her younger self, Jones bears so much love and empathy for that person. If she could pen her a letter, she would tell her that there will be a space and role for her in the world. “There's absolutely nothing that you have to change about yourself that you don't want to change over time.”
