In Honor of “Fast and Furious 6,” What’s The Greatest Car Chase Movie?

Fast and Furious 6 may be yet another zany movie about adult bumper cars starring the familiarly furious Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, and Jordana Brewster (who, juding by her cinematic output and striking resemblance, should be officially nicknamed Gasoline Ali MacGraw), but it got me thinking: Can you name any car chase movies you actually care about? And if so, what’s your favorite film in the genre?

Here are my top five.

5) Bonnie and Clyde: There’s no better action movie soundtrack than Estelle Parsons’ shrieking.

4) Back to the Future: Chiiiiiild, when Biff is after Marty on his makeshift skateboard? So unexpected and hilarious.

3) Bullitt: I’m just going to throw this out there: Steve McQueen is somehow both very sexy and very weird-looking. There.

2) The Getaway: It’s easy to forget that the original Gasoline Ali MacGraw is Ali MacGraw.

And the winner:

1) Paper Moon

I’ve waxed poetic about Paper Moon before, and I realize it’s not a formal chase thriller, but that’s what makes it my standout choice of the genre: The big “chase” is an unplanned turn of events in an otherwise droll period film, and when Moses and Addie (Ryan and Tatum O’Neal) finally flee authorities, they wind around on dirt roads and turn the whole movie into an eye-popping western.

If only Madeline Kahn could’ve been in the car during that dynamite, wacky sequence. If only every movie had Madeline Kahn in it constantly. Forever.

What’s your favorite?
