Watch The Video For Strange Names' "Trespassing"

"We write songs about boys, we write songs about girls, songs about lost love and a lot about lust," says lead singer Liam Benzvi.

Hailing from Minneapolis, Strange Names released their debut album, Use Your Time Wisely, earlier this year and toured with Azealia Banks over the summer.

We came across their song "Only Boy," and fell for its infectious power-pop.

Lead singer Liam Benzvi is openly gay—and admits he's a bit of a coquette onstage—but says the decision to come out was not an easy one for him.

“For a while I was very wary of attaching that to the music, only because I believe in the power of universality with regard to a message,” Benzvi tells Attitude.

"I never wanted to only tell a gay story, or include only a gay audience, as I think stories should be open to everyone," he continued.

"I never felt excluded from songs that didn’t necessarily tell my story and I wouldn’t want to do the same to anyone else."

Instead, Benzvi says, Strange Names write about the band's feelings and experiences through a broad lens.

"We write songs about boys, we write songs about girls, songs about lost love and a lot about lust," he said.

The band gets comparisons to Talking Heads and the B52s, but Benzvi says he gets his inspiration from "power women."

“I look more to Cyndi Lauper and Siouxsie and the Banshees," he said.
