Indonesian Territory Bans Transgender Hairdressers

"If we are not allowed to work, what shall we do for a living?"

A government order now bans openly trans people from working in beauty parlors in the Indonesia territory of Aceh, which follows strict Sharia law.

"It is a call to LGBT people and the beauty parlors’ owners," an agency director said Friday, according to the Jakarta Post. It appears, though, that the ban is primarily aimed at gender-nonconforming people.

Violators could lose their business licenses.

"Working at beauty parlors is the only skill we have. If we are not allowed to work, what shall we do for a living?" said one stylist woman, who indicated most hairdressers in Aceh employ trans people. "Many customers prefer to be handled by transgender staff."

Sharia police have been known to target beauty parlor for raids, claiming LGBT people could influence the behavior of young people.

Indonesia has seen a troubling uptick in homophobic incidents and regulations in recent years—the punishment for homosexual sex is 100 lashes and, just last month, the government banned "gay" emojis.
