Instagram's Latest Feature Aims To Prevent Self-Harm And Suicide

"These tools are designed to let you know that you are surrounded by a community that cares about you."

Instagram has introduced a new function that could potentially help individuals dealing with eating disorders, self-harm and thoughts of suicide.

The new update allows users to anonymously flag content that seems to indicate that someone might be struggling with depression or self-injury. These flagged posts are then sent to a special Instagram team for review.

"We have teams working around the world, 24/7, who review these reports," said Instagram spokesperson Marni Tomljanovic. "They prioritize the most serious reports and respond quickly."

If the team believes a report is serious, they'll send the user the following message: "Someone saw one of your posts and thinks you might be going through a difficult time. If you need support, we’d like to help."

The user will then be directed to a "Support Resources" tab, with options to "Talk to a Friend," "Contact a Hotline" and "Get tips and support."

The Wall Street Journal reports that the app has partnered up with over 40 different organizations worldwide that deal specifically with populations at risk of committing self-harm or suicide, including the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, the National Eating Disorders Association and Save.org.

"We also consulted with people with real-life experience with eating disorders, self-injury or suicide," remarked Tomljanovic.

"We listen to mental health experts when they tell us that outreach from a loved one can make a real difference for those who may be in distress," she continued. "At the same time, we understand friends and family often want to offer support but don’t know how best to reach out."

Instagram COO Marne Levine added: "These tools are designed to let you know that you are surrounded by a community that cares about you, at a moment when you might most need that reminder."
