Here's How to Celebrate the World's First International Pronouns Day

"Referring to people by the pronouns they determine for themselves is basic to human dignity."

A group of LGBTQ activists has launched the world's first-ever International Pronouns Day.

The campaign, an independent project led by an executive board and endorsed by a long list of queer-inclusive advocacy groups, institutions, and businesses, seeks to make asking for and respecting other people's personal pronouns commonplace:

Referring to people by the pronouns they determine for themselves is basic to human dignity. Being referred to by the wrong pronouns particularly affects transgender and gender nonconforming people. Together, we can transform society to celebrate people’s multiple, intersecting identities. We encourage colleges, schools, workplaces, and local organizations to hold educational and empowering events on International Pronouns Day.

Groups like GLSEN, GLAAD, and Gay Men's Health Crisis (GMHC) have taken to social media to voice their support for the project.

Organizers have also linked to a database of resources about pronouns, including videos and blog posts detailing why personal pronouns matter to the trans and gender non-conforming community—and how to politely ask for somebody's pronouns.

The inaugural International Pronouns Day is today, October 17, 2018, but organizers say the date is subject to change in future years.

Supporters can register on the International Pronouns Day website for updates and more information. In the meantime, members of the LGBTQ community and allies are asked to lend the project their support and share their pronouns on social media with the hashtag #InternationalPronounsDay.
