Iowa Man Tries To Marry Lawnmower After Lawmaker Says Marriage Equality Makes It Legal

At least one Iowa state representative is still confused about the Supreme Court's decision.

An Iowa man tried to tie the knot with his lawnmower this week after Iowa Rep. Steve King insinuated the Supreme Court's recent ruling on same-sex marriage made it legal.

Speaking at a campaign event for Presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee last week, King regurgitated a story he'd previously told about an unnamed Christian lawyer he knows, who told him marriage equality means only one party must consent to marriage.

His comments were previously reported in the July 7 issue of the Dickinson County News:

"The civil government got into the business of promoting and supporting Holy Matrimony because these basic values are the building block of our civilization. Now, the Supreme Court has ruled that they're not. Their ruling really says anybody can marry anybody -- and eventually it will be in any combination.

I had a strong, Christian lawyer tell me yesterday (Tuesday, June 30) that, under this decision that he has read, what it brings about is: It only requires one human being in this relationship -- that you could marry your lawnmower with this decision. I think he's right."

So with that, Iowa Starting Line reporter Pat Rynard took his lawnmower to the county clerk's office with the intention of getting married. Unfortunately for Rep. King, Rynard found out it isn't legal to marry a lawnmower.

In the video below, he finds out marrying a lawnmower isn't legal because a) He's already married to a woman, b) his lawnmower must be 18 years of age, and c) his lawnmower must be able to sign a consent form.

In short, you can't marry an inanimate object. Conservatives need something better to talk about.
