Iran Bans "Gay" Hairstyles, Eyebrow Plucking And Tanning For Men
"Homosexual" and "devil worshipping" hairstyles have been banned in Iran, as the government begins cracking down on trends considered to be "un-Islamic" or "imitations of western lifestyles."
Various different hairstyles and body modifications are usually banned just in time for summer every year, when many young Iranians start adapting new looks for the changing weather. This year, specifically, "spiky cuts" are considered by the government to be too gay.
Though Iranian president Hassan Rouhani has spoken out against the ban, enforcement persists and barber shop owners giving the hairstyles are even being targeted.
"Any shop that cuts hair int he devil worshipping style will be harshly dealt with and their license revoked," Mostafa Govahi, head of Iran's barbers' union told the Isna news agency. "Tattoos, solarium treatments and plucking eyebrows [for men] are also forbidden."
Govahi claimed the Iranian government had given barbers a list of appropriate hairstyles for men and warned that any haircut "adopted by homosexuals" would also be banned.
Opponents of the crackdown warn that police should be enforcing the law and not Islam.
"Police do not have a duty to enforce Islam," Rouhani told senior Iranian officials last week. "No police officer can do something and say he did it because God commanded it, or the prophet had said so. It has nothing to do with the police."
