Is Brandi Carlile the Best Gay Rocker?

Brandi Carlile

If we were voting for the best gay rocker who’s currently making music, then I would vote for Brandi Carlile. (And Adam Lambert.)

Really, Carlile’s just an excellent rock musician, regardless of her sexuality. Her rootsy sound puts her next to Mumford & Sons in the current pantheon of good, old-fashioned, stick-to-your-ribs musicians. The fact that she’s openly gay just gives her twenty extra awesome points.

Need proof of her kick-assery? Check out the soulful blues of “That Wasn’t Me,” from her brand new album Bear Creek. Carlile sounds like the daughter of Bonnie Raitt as her heartbreaking voice rises and falls over the drums. Then some background singers sneak in to add a little soul.

What’s that? You want to rock harder? Don’t worry, boo. Brandi’s got you. She stomps the floor with Appalachian fury on “Raise Hell,” also from the new album:

And just to keep it real, let’s go back to Carlile’s breakthrough hit “The Story,” which is still raw and exciting after five years and an appearance on Grey’s Anatomy.

But if “The Story” is the only Brandi Carlile song you know, then I highly recommend checking out her entire catalog. The lady’s music will break your face. In the best way.
