Is Carson Daly Really Homophobic?

As we all know by now, Carson Daly has come under fire for a recent comment he made regarding homosexual men and their lack of toughness. No sooner had jokingly stated on his radio program that should he be on a flight with a rogue and delirious pilot the only other men would likely be complacent and weak gays, he even did the dreaded “gay voice.” Cue media backlash.

Is Carson Daly an idiot? Of course. It was a stupid, stupid thing to say and no one is doubting that. But is Carson Daly homophobic? Absolutely not, and the attempts at some outlets to peg him as such is ludicrous. This is the guy who spent the nineties with every boy band in America after all.

Just look what Carson’s close friend, the openly gay Dave Holmes, had to say:

But if somehow even a guy like Carson has that kind of tired-ass weak-florist horseshit bouncing around his head, it might not be entirely unrelated to the fact that the gay press and GLAAD has given him more ink for 20 seconds of being a jackass than they’ve given me for 15 years of being an out gay man on TV.

And it’s not just me: there are tons- tons!- of out gay men and women doing great work in comedy clubs (James Adomian! Chip Pope! Dave Rubin!) and rock venues (Kill The Complex! Boheme! BEN FUCKING WISE!) and on the internet (I don’t even know where to start).

So, gay media and GLAAD: how’s about instead of trying to turn his volume down, you use your power and reach to help us crank ours up?
