Is Jussie Smollett’s Jamal Lyon Going Straight On “Empire”?

"You never know where people are going to go... until they go there."

Many fans were stunned by one of Empire’s midseason cliffhangers, when Jussie Smollett’s character, gay musician Jamal Lyon, had sex with a woman.

When the show went into hiatus last November, Jamal had connected with his music idol Skye (Alicia Keys). Admiration turned to lust and the two locked lips by the piano, presumably followed by an off-camera roll in the hay.

Empire producer Ilene Chaiken says the show’s not going to ignore the situation: In upcoming episodes, gay activists will protest Jamal, accusing him of flip-flopping on his sexuality.

But, says Chakin “we’re very clear that Jamal is gay and Jamal is clear that he’s gay… it just happened.”

“I think that you never know where people are going to go in terms of their sexuality until they go there, and people often don’t know themselves,” she told xFinity. “So… we could explore sexuality with other characters, not just with Jamal, and I’m sure we will.”

Empire returns Wednesday, March 30 at 9/8c, on Fox.
