Is "Wake Up Call" a Game-Changer for Music Festivals?

Will luxury experiences and top acts in intimate spaces be the future of the festival?

You would expect a music festival with a line-up that included Phantogram, Betty Who, Chromeo, Charli XCX, Le Youth, CID, and Léon to take place at a jam-packed large scale venue. However, this past weekend W Hotels turned that idea on its head by hosting its first "Wake Up Call" event at its Hollywood location.

Instead of making people stand shoulder to shoulder with thousands of others out in a dirt field to watch its more than two dozen artists, "Wake Up Call" elevated the experience—a perk for its rewards program members—by allowing just several hundred attendees catch musical acts while eating Shake Shack burgers and lounging poolside, sipping cocktails in the lobby's "Living Room" space, or dancing up on its rooftop.

Best of all, at the end of each night, getting home meant navigating a crammed elevator in lieu of a bottlenecked parking lot.

"I hate festivals and crowds," said J.P. Suffron, a comedian from Seattle who wore a pink wig for the Betty Who show. "So, it was fun to see [everyone] perform in a more intimate space. I even ran into her (Betty) and Charli XCX on my hotel floor."

How did the performers feel about the pared down festival crowd?

“Obviously, the dream is to play for 80,000 people but there’s something that’s really cool about, you know, when there are 500 people in front of you and you get to feel the energy in that room. You feel like it’s special,” Betty Who (photo at top) told NewNowNext. “Sometimes I want to see the faces of the people I’m playing for. It makes it way more personal.”

W Hotels hopes to recapture the success of its inaugural event with iterations in Barcelona, September 21-23, headlined by Martin Solveig, Robin Schulz, Pete Tong, and The Shapeshifters; and again in Bali, October 4-6, with musical acts Tov Lo, Sam Feldt, Angus & Julia Stone, and Klingande.
