Italian Vogue Offers Same-Sex Smooches For Its September Issue

Ciao bello!

The September issue is a big deal for fashion magazines, and Vogue Italia is using its to celebrate equality: The fashion magazine is featuring steamy same-sex kisses on two different versions of its September cover.

Real-life boyfriends Edoardo Velicskov and Pablo Rousson lock lips on one cover, shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, with the word bacio ("kiss") in giant letters. Models Lily Aldridge and Vittoria Ceretti smooch on another, and a third cover features a kiss between female model Maria Carla Boscono and male model Federico Spinas.

It's a powerful statement, as same-sex marriage is still not legal in Italy. (The country only recognized same-sex unions last year and ranks among the lowest in Western Europe when it comes to LGBT rights.)

Last year Vogue Paris featured transgender model Valentina Sampaio on its cover, and Andreja Pejic became the first trans model featured in American Vogue in 2015.

There have been missteps, though: Vogue apologized in July for calling cis, straight celebrities Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik "genderfluid" because they occasionally swap clothing.
