Jackie Evancho's Trans Sister To Ignorant Bigots: "We're Not Here To Harm Your Children"
Teen singer Jackie Evancho and her sister, transgender activist Juliet Evancho, continued raising awareness of trans issues as guests on Friday's episode of The View.
Jackie, who was criticized for performing at Donald Trump’s inauguration, asked for a meeting with Trump via Twitter back in February to discuss transgender rights, in response to his administration’s removal of federal protections for trans students under Title IX.
The 17-year-old America’s Got Talent finalist also tweeted that she was “obviously disappointed” by the White House’s assertion that the right to use a bathroom consistent with one’s gender identity was a state issue.
Although press secretary Sean Spicer responded at a briefing that "the president would be welcome to meet with her," the sisters revealed on The View that they have heard nothing else from the White House. "We’re hopeful," Jackie says.
Juliet, 18, recently sued and won the right to use the school bathroom that aligns with her gender identity. She says that if given the opportunity to speak to Trump, she would make him aware of the abuse and discrimination that she and other trans people suffer.
As for a those still horrified by the idea of boys lurking in the girls’ room? “That’s not an issue because I’m not a boy," says Juliet, who blames such prejudice on ignorance.
"That’s why I’m here," she continues. "I really want to show everyone and teach everyone that we are people, this is real, and we’re not here to harm your children."
