James Comey Attends Lesbian Musical "Fun Home" As First Post-Firing Outing

"'Fun Home' has got to be better and more enjoyable than 'Crazy White House.'"

How did James Comey get over being fired by Donald Trump? By attending a Tony-winning musical in his first public appearance since his dismissal. The former FBI director and his wife, Patrice, saw the Saturday matinee performance of Fun Home at the National Theater in D.C.

The official Fun Home twitter account posted a photo of the Comeys with the cast, and a caption reading "Today James Comey and his wife Patrice joined us at #FunHome in Washington, D.C.."

It was met with several humorous responses.

Now on tour, Fun Home is the acclaimed adaptation of lesbian cartoonist Alison Bechedel's graphic memoir, which recounts a childhood grappling with her sexuality and the suicide of her closeted father. It won the Tony for best musical in 2015.

Producer Barbara Whitman told The New York Times that the Comeys purchased the tickets some time ago. "Their daughter saw the tour in Chicago and told them they had to see it," she revealed. "They were wiping away the tears as they came backstage to meet the cast. He said something to the effect of it was the best thing they could have picked for their first outing."

Comey was appointed Director of the FBI by Barack Obama in 2013. He oversaw the bureau's investigation into the Hillary Clinton email controversy and, by many critics' account, contributed to her losing the presidency. He was dismissed by Donald Trump on May 9, just days after requesting more funds to investigate Russia’s interference in the election.

He's been described as a pro-LGBT Republican, signing an amicus brief in 2013 urging the Supreme Court to strike down California’s Proposition 8 and similar marriage bans. He also over saw the FBI's investigation of the Pulse massacre in Orlando last year, saying "We hope that our fellow Americans will not let fear become disabling."

Washington bigwigs popping up at Broadway shows is something of a trend, though the responses vary: Hilary Clinton and Barack Obama were feted at Hamilton, while Vice President Mike Pence had a less-than-ideal reception when he hit the production in November.
