Exclusive: Singer Jamie Hannah Releases the Queer Club Banger We All Needed

The Boy George protege teamed up with gay DJ duo F9 for a remix video of "Sound of My Youth."

Openly gay pop star Jamie Hannah has a four-octave vocal range that can challenge even the most talented female opera singers.

A protege of Boy George (and under the queer legend’s record label), the U.K.-based Hannah was first introduced to the U.S. music scene when Billboard premiered his music video for “Sound of My Youth.” Now, Hannah has teamed up with gay DJs and remixing wizards F9 (Russell Small and James Wiltshire, formerly known as the Freemasons) for a more cheerful, club-version of the single, along with a music video, premiering exclusively on NewNowNext.

“I’m not normally a remix guy, actually,” Hannah tells NewNowNext. “I usually like listening to songs in their original forms, but F9 are legends and I love what they do. I feel like the remix gives it a whole new energy. It makes you feel so good and upbeat, which is a real juxtaposition from the original’s vibe. And when I heard that classical Spanish guitar they had put over the track—I was really so pleased!”

F9 brings the original song up into a higher register and has given it a more anthemic, upbeat quality. The music video’s energy lends well to the remix, as Hannah and his dance troupe take on ballroom-inspired choreography. He and his friends vogue joyfully around a London dance studio as pink, purple, and rainbow lights backlight their moves, creating contrast and shadowplay. The experience is invigorating.

“For the video, I worked closely with our director, choreographer, and dancers,” says Hannah. “Everyone in it is a young English creative, like me, so we have a lot of energy in common. I am pretty hands on with all my creative projects. Being hands on is my favorite part of expressing myself.”

Hannah continues, “I’m also so happy that this version is reaching through to LGBTQ audiences like here on NewNowNext, and also to the club audiences. The remix gives a different perspective from what I was projecting originally, but I’m so glad that it does!”

What’s next for Hannah?

“My next single with Boy George will be out June 15, and far as touring goes, we will be announcing something very soon!”
