Jason Collins Signs With The Nets, Becomes First Openly Gay Player In NBA

Jason Collins signed a 10-day contract today with the Brooklyn Nets, making the 35-year-old center the first openly gay player in the NBA. He will make his return to the court tonight in the Nets' matchup against the L.A. Lakers at Staples Center.

But don't think this is some political posturing or feel-good maneuver: "The decision to sign Jason was a basketball decision," said Nets general manager Billy King. "We needed to increase our depth inside, and with his experience and size, we felt he was the right choice."

In April, Collins came out in an article in a Sports Illustrated article, but he was unsigned at the time and many wondered if any team would step up. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver praised Collins for his perseverance, honesty and skill. "Jason told us that his goal was to earn another contract with an NBA team," said Silver. "Today, I want to commend him on achieving his goal. I know everyone in the NBA family is excited for him and proud that our league fosters an inclusive and respectful environment."

According to the New York Times:

Collins’s arrival with the Nets began to take shape two weeks ago, when he worked out for them in Los Angeles over the All-Star break. The Nets, who need help with interior defense and rebounding, were also interested in Glen Davis, who was bought out of his contract last week by the Orlando Magic.

With Davis appearing to be near an agreement with the Los Angeles Clippers, though, the Nets shifted their focus on Sunday to Collins

NBA players can sign two consecutive 10-day contracts before a team must either sign them for the rest of the season or release them.  Whether the Nets will bring Collins in fulltime is yet to be determined.
