Murdered Trans Woman Might Have Been Victim Of Serial Attacker

Denzell Thomas is suspected of attacking two separate transgender women in Birmingham, Alabama.

A transgender woman shot and robbed in her Birmingham home last Monday may have fallen victim to the same suspect responsible for killing a trans woman in a hotel room last month, authorities say.

Police have charged 23-year-old Denzell Thomas with attempted murder and first degree robbery after he entered the house of his 24-year-old victim Monday morning and shot her in the face.

According to AL.com, the victim's boyfriend arrived on the scene shortly after Thomas, but was unable to stop the latter from absconding with the victim's cash and debit cards.

Thomas remains a person of interest in the shooting death of 30-year-old trans woman Jazz Alford, who was murdered at the Kings Inn in Birmingham on September 23.

Though he has yet to be charged for Alford's murder, he is awaiting trial on "charges of carrying a pistol without a license and drug possession after arrests over the summer."

“Her death was a huge hit for the LGBT community,’’ Alford's sister Toya Milan told reporters.

“There was another transgender [person] shot multiple times somewhere else recently," she added. "People think [transgender people] are monsters, when really we just want to be accepted.”

By the Advocate's count, Alford was the 22nd transgender person murdered this year, surpassing 2015's count of 21.
