Jazz Jennings Shares Some Hard Truths About Dating As A Trans Teen

"Boys flirt and hug my friends, but they just whisk by me as if I don't exist."

Jazz Jennings, transgender activist and star of TLC's I Am Jazz, opens up about what it's like to date as a trans teen in a new op-ed for Harper's Bazaar.

In it, the 15-year-old trailblazer recounts one of her first real dates with a cisgender boy who "didn't care" about her gender identity the way other boys did, her first kiss, and the sometimes heartbreaking struggle she endured to get there.

"Let's face it, your average straight cis-gender teenage boy isn't going to pursue a relationship with a trans-girl," Jennings wrote.

"Even if he does find her attractive, it could be social suicide if he acts on his feelings. I know this, because this is my life. I don't mean to sound harsh, and I know for a fact that there are some boys who don't mind dating girls with male genitalia, but the majority won't. Boys flirt and hug my friends, but they just whisk by me as if I don't exist."

Jennings eventually found her Prince Charming in a boy who whisked her away on a first date to a butterfly park, and showed her that girls like her are worth loving.

"He's one of those special human beings who looks at a person through his eyes and not those of his peers," Jennings wrote.

"He really doesn't care what anyone thinks, and told me that if he received some slack, it didn't matter because I was worth it. How could I say no to that?"

Jennings also said she thinks that dating will get easier for trans teens like her as the community becomes more visible.

"The dating pool is less than limited, because I'm the only 'out' transgender girl in my school," she wrote.

"I feel that there are others lurking, some may be stealth, while others just aren't ready to come out."
