"Transparent" Star Jeffrey Tambor Loves Maura's Caftans As Much As We Do

Let's face facts: Maura's caftans take Transparent from a solid 98 all the way to 100.

Costume designer Marie Schley previously told MTV Style, "It was an androgynous thing that Maura might wear around the house while she’s finally being herself in the privacy of her own home. And it was kind of an inspiration for the rest of the season. We put her in a lot of caftans."

As Julia Robert's character, Isabel, once told Jena Malone's character, Anna, in the 1998 film Stepmom, "THANK GOD FOR THAT."

"I think Maura will always wear caftans," Schley continued. "Maura is 70 years old and those things are comfortable."

100% agreed.

So how does the show's Golden Globe-winning star, Jeffrey Tambor, feel about them?

"I love the caftans," Tambor told The Cut at a For Your Consideration event for Transparent over the weekend.

He continued:

Maura is not quite good at her look yet, so her wigs are not quite right, she doesn’t know how to do makeup yet, her hand shakes when she does makeup, her first outfits are not thought out right away.

Then she finds the caftans and she finds her real profile and I love that.

[Creator] Jill [Soloway] and the great Marie Schley were very much a part of that. And I’m so comfortable in that whole trip. I like when Maura’s uncomfortable and I like when she’s comfortable. I love that because it’s very human and it’s very true.

As for whether it's influenced Tambor's own style: "I, Jeffrey Tambor, have such a horrible body image, it is such a pleasure that Maura delights in [her] wardrobe. I love that. Maura’s very good for me. It changes what Jeffrey Tambor feels like as a citizen, what he feels like as a parent, what he feels like as a friend, as an actor, definitely."

Amen!
