Jennifer Hudson And Harvey Fierstein To Star In NBC's "Hairspray Live!"

Welcome to the '60s!

Some new and familiar faces are headed to Baltimore!

Jennifer Hudson and Harvey Fierstein have been cast in NBC's next live musical television event Hairpray Live! reports BroadwayWorld.

Hudson known for her roles in Dreamgirls, Fox's Empire, and currently starring as Shug Avery in the critically acclaimed revival of The Color Purple on Broadway will play Motormouth Maybelle (played by Queen Latifah in the 2007 film version).

Fierstein will slip back into a muumuu and return to Hairspray as Edna Turnblad, the role he originated on Broadway and won a Tony for.

Robert Greenblatt, Chairman of NBC Entertainment commented on the casting:

"We are beyond thrilled with this incredibly talented duo of stars for 'Hairspray Live!,' Harvey Fierstein created the role of Edna Turnblad on Broadway in an indelible Tony-winning performance that demanded to be memorialized on film, and we're happy he wanted to step into her shoes one last, unforgettable time. We're also so grateful that the incomparable Jennifer Hudson will play Motormouth Maybelle and we know her rendition of 'I Know Where I've Been' will literally stop the show."

It was also announced that Fierstein will write the teleplay for the live musical, adding to the list of other musicals he has recently written the book for including Newsies and Kinky Boots.

The roles of Maybelle and Edna have been announced, but an open casting call for an unknown is underway to find the musical's lead, Tracy Turnblad:

And if that wasn't enough, here's You Can't Stop the Beat, the rousing closing number from the show-and 2007 movie adaptation-to get you even more excited for what will surely be the must-see TV event of the year:
