We don't talk about Bruno, but people are definitely talking about Jessica Darrow.

Even if you don't recognize her name, you know Darrow's voice if you have watched or listened to the soundtrack for Encanto, Disney's smash-hit animated musical. Darrow plays the character of Luisa Madrigal, Mirabel's sister with superhuman strength, whose song, “Surface Pressure” hit the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Darrow knows a thing or two about animated characters, since she loves Spongebob Squarepants, and says that her queer awakening came from watching An Extremely Goofy Movie, the sequel to A Goofy Movie, when she was younger:

"My queer awakening was probably when I first fell in love with an animated character. Being like, Hmm, I like this. It's a cartoon. It's not a real human, but I actually fell in love specifically with the Beret Girl from the Goofy Movie," Darrow tells Logo. "I was like, Why am I attracted to this dog? Human hybrid sounds pretty queer to me. That was the first twinkle of queerness that entered my life."

In addition to being part of one of the biggest animated films of all time, Darrow is also giving her voice to her own music, releasing original tracks like the groovy Sade-esque "Come Clean" earlier this year. But when it comes to Pride, Darrow describes it as "the gift of love."

"Pride is the gift of love. Pride is the gift of choice, of voice. Pride is all of these amazing gifts and being able to celebrate the access that we have to enjoy these amazing things that have to do with our community, celebrating our beautiful community," Darrow explains. "The reason why we are here is because of our amazing brothers and sisters who fought to make changes before us and allow us to love and shout out loud at the top of our lungs so openly. "

"I think that's what Pride is. It is celebrating humanity and all of its different colors."
