Why Are "Harry Potter" Fans Moaning That J.K. Rowling Is Homophobic?

"I will never understand J.K. Rowling saying she supports the LGBT community..."

J.K. Rowling was forced to face an angry mob on Twitter this week, when fans thought she had officially confirmed that the character Sirius Black is not gay.

Many have assumed that the Harry Potter character was into other guys, but the author never specified one way or the other.

But when Rowling hinted that the answer to a question she's constantly asked is "No, he isn't," fans immediately assumed she was referring to Black's sexuality — and they didn't take it well.

#JKRowlingIsOverParty quickly started trending, as irate fans began to attack the writer for being a "traitor to the LGBT cause."

Meanwhile, the author revealed that she wasn't even referring to Sirius Black in her comment, adding that there's still "no news" regarding his sexuality.

She also thanked the many fans who jumped to her defense when they pointed out her contributions to the LGBT community, not to mention her declaration that Dumbledore was gay way back in 2007.

Most recently, Rowling even passionately tweeted in defense of Tom Daley after he received an avalanche of homophobic tweets during the Rio Olympics.

“Twitter’s a strange place at times, but for every bit of hate I’ve received I’ve always had so much more love and support," wrote Rowling. "Obrigada a todos!”
