John Barrowman Just Became A Series Regular On All The CW's DC Universe Shows

Producer Greg Berlanti says having Barrowman jump from "Arrow" to "Supergirl" mirrors the interconnectivity of comic books.

John Barrowman just got a promotion: The out actor has been playing devious archer Malcolm Merlyn on Arrow for several seasons, but now he’s signed on as a series regular on all CW-owned shows set in the DC Universe—including Flash, Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow.

His new deal is similar to that of Wentworth Miller, whose Captain Cold is now a “free agent” in CW's superhero shows.

Producer Greg Berlanti said the arrangement mirrors the interconnected nature of comic books.

“What it really emulates to us is the comic books themselves, where there really are a cast of characters,” said Berlanti. “In success, we hope to continue with other characters finding their way across all the shows.”

The CW’s DC universe has been a fertile ground for LGBT talent—in addition to Barrowman and Miller, Colton Haynes has appeared off-and-on on Arrow and Victor Garber is a regular on Legends of Tomorrow.

Barrowman is also rumored to be returning to Doctor Who, where he became a fan favorite as omnisexual rapscallion Captain Jack Harkness.

He just canceled an appearance at a Montreal comic book convention this weekend over an unspecified threat.

"This morning an email was sent that directly referenced me," he wrote on Facebook. "And in light of recent events, I’ve decided to take the advice of my management, and family, as they were concerned for my safety."
