Could Captain Jack Harkness be returning to Doctor Who?
John Barrowman, who plays the pansexual rogue, seemed to feed rumors with a recent video on social media announcing he’d be back in Cardiff, where the show is filmed.
“But I’m not telling you what for!” he teased.
Captain Jack was last seen on the Who spin-off Torchwood, which ended in 2011, and fans are hoping he’ll return in this year’s Doctor Who Christmas special—or possibly the upcoming Who-verse series Class.
Asked about the return of Harkness and fellow fan-fave River Song (Alex Kingston) last year, showrunner Steven Moffat said, “Both River Song and Jack Harkness are massive characters in Doctor Who mythology. Their returns would have to be seismic, not routine.”
Does this picture of Barrowman with former companion Rose Tyler (Billie Piper) pretty much make it official?
When Barrowman, 49, debuted as Doctor Who’s caddish Time Agent in 2005, he was a rarity—a non-heterosexual who oozed charisma and had a long list of conquests, including Christopher Isherwood, Marcel Proust and even the WWII Air Force captain whose name he took in tribute.
His best-known relationship was with fellow Torchwood agent Ianto Jones, but like most of his affairs, it ended tragically.
Hopefully he’ll have better luck this time.
