Jonathan Rhys Meyers Joins Cast Of Roland Emmerich's "Stonewall"

Jonathan Rhys Meyers is the latest addition to out Independence Day director Roland Emmerich's film on the birth of the modern gay rights movement, Stonewall. Along with Ron Perlman, Rhys Meyers joins Jeremy Irvine, Caleb Landry Jones and newcomer Jonny Beauchamp for the film, which will focus on one man's political awakening amidst the riots in June 1969.

Featuring a script by noted gay Jon Robin Baitz, Stonewall has already kicked off production in and around Montreal. The Hollywood Reporter provides a summary of the plot:

Irvine plays Danny Winters who flees to New York, leaving behind his beloved sister (King). Homeless and destitute, he befriends a group of street kids who soon introduce him to the watering hole of the local drag queens, gays, lesbians, and everything in between: the Stonewall Inn. At the bar, Danny meets the suave Trevor (Rhys Meyers) before catching the eye of Ed Murphy (Perlman), Stonewall's repulsive manager who colludes with corrupt police, exploits homeless youth for financial gain, and is even suspected to have had a hand in some of their "disappearances." It all spirals out of control when the police unexpectedly raid Stonewall. In a storm of anger and with the toss of a single brick, a riot ensues and a crusade for equality is born.

Those familiar with Rhys Meyers knows this won't be his first walk on the historically queer side, having shared the screen and a kiss with Ewan McGregor in 1997's The Velvet Goldmine, loosely based on David Bowie's relationships with Lou Reed and Iggy Pop.

However, let's just hope Stonewall fares better than the ill-fated Dracula -- though that is an admittedly low bar.
