Joseph Fiennes Once Played A Transgender Gynecologist In A Ryan Murphy Pilot

Brad Falchuk, Ryan Murphy's producing partner on everything from Glee to American Horror Story, told an interesting tale at a discussion on LGBT representations on television last month at the New Yorker Festival.

Back in 2008, when Nip/Tuck was winding down, Murphy and Falchuk pitched a show to network honchos at FX called Pretty/Handsome, about a well-to-do gynecologist who was transitioning from male to female.

Joseph Fiennes played the transgender gynecologist in the pilot, The Matrix's Carrie Ann Moss played his wife, and Blythe Danner and Robert Wagner co-starred as his parents, Bunny and Scotch. (Great names!)

FX passed on the series, but it's interesting to note who played one of Fiennes' sons: Jonathan Groff, who went on to appear on Glee. Fiennes, of course, also had a part in a future Murphy-Falchuk production: He played twisted Monsignor Howard on American Horror Story: Asylum.

While Pretty/Handsome would have predated Transparent as the first series with a trans main character by a full six years, maybe its for the best it didn't picked up: Murphy is known for creating vibrant, campy shows with devoted fans—not tackling sensitive gender issues with a delicate touch. (As anyone who remembers Famke Janssen's Ava Moore on Nip/Tuck can attest.)

Given his penchant for recasting his favorite actors, though, we fully expect Carrie Ann Moss will turn up on AHS next season.
