Everyone deserves time and grace to explore their sexuality, and Disney stars like Joshua Bassett are no exception.
The High School Musical: The Musical: The Series star has issued a Notes app statement about his sexuality after a video of him calling singer Harry Styles “hot” went viral. Bassett made the comment in a video for Clevver News in which he praised the “Watermelon Sugar” singer’s versatility. “Like, he’s cool,” he said. “Who doesn’t think Harry Styles is cool?”
“Also, he’s hot,” Bassett said, only to catch himself and quip, “I guess this is also my coming-out video.”
But the 20-year-old actor and singer isn’t here for fans or media outlets labeling his sexual orientation. “My entire life, people have told me my sexuality,” he wrote in his statement. “People have shamed me for things they know nothing about.”
Bassett went on to thank “those of you who stand for love and acceptance,” alluding to the fact that he is still “figuring out” how he identifies and isn’t ready to put a label on it yet. (It makes sense: According to HSMTMTSM stans, his costar Olivia Rodrigo allegedly wrote her chart-topping breakup anthem “Drivers License” about her relationship with Bassett. The pair appears to be on good terms now, though.)

“It’s 2021,” Bassett continued. “We are the generation of love and growth, and it’s time we start acting like it. … It’s okay to still be figuring out who you are. Life’s too short to let ignorance and hatred win. I choose love.”
Amen to that! Welcome to the fam, Joshua. There’s always space for you here.
