“Andi Mack” Star Joshua Rush Comes Out as Bisexual

"Happy 20biteen!"

First his character, Cyrus, came out, and now Andi Mack star Joshua Rush has revealed in a series of tweets that he is bisexual.

“I saw so many of you watch Cyrus come out and said ‘Hey! I can be me!'” Rush tweeted. “How ironic, isn’t it, that me, playing that character, never had mustered up that courage?"

“Instead of feeling the courage to tell you today that I am an out and proud bisexual man because of the character I played for four years, I feel that courage thinking of all of you, who felt emboldened by Cyrus to come out,” he told his 70,000 followers.

"Being bi isn't all of my identity, nor is it the most important part of my identity," Rush explained. "Bi erasure and issues like it are important, but trans women of color still have a life expectancy of THIRTY FIVE YEARS and that is absolutely unacceptable."

As NewNowNext previously reported, Andi Mack made history and headlines in October 2017 when 13-year-old Cyrus Goodman (Rush) confided in friends Andi (Peyton Elizabeth Lee) and Buffy (Sofia Wylie) that he had a crush on Andi’s boyfriend, Jonah (Asher Angel), marking the start of Disney Channel’s first coming-out storyline. The GLAAD Media Award-winning series made history again in February when Cyrus became the first Disney Channel character to say “I’m gay.”

“With more and more young people coming out as LGBTQ, Andi Mack is reflecting the lives and lived experiences of so many LGBTQ youth around the country,” said GLAAD president Sarah Kate Ellis in a previous statement. “Television reflects the real life world and today that includes LGBTQ youth who deserve to see their lives depicted on their favorite shows.”

Rush also suggested his fans donate to GLAAD, noting that Andi Mack "wouldn't have existed in the form that it did without them, but also because their hard work in furthering acceptance in media helps an uncountable number of people."

Thank you to you for giving me the courage to know who I am and tell you this today," he continued.

"Happy 20biteen!"
