Jude Law Signs On To Play Young Dumbledore In Next "Fantastic Beasts" Movie

Fans might finally get to see Albus have a gay romantic scene.

Jude Law has been cast as young Albus Dumbledore in the sequel to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Variety reports David Yates is returning to direct the film, which will once again see Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scammander, with Johnny Depp joining the cast as the villainous Grindelwald.

Dumbledore, of course, is one of the most beloved characters in the Harry Potter universe, played by Richard Harris in the first two Potter films and then by Michael Gambon after Harris’ death in 2002.

"Jude Law is a phenomenally talented actor whose work I have long admired, and I’m looking forward to finally having the opportunity to work with him,” said Yates. “I know he will brilliantly capture all the unexpected facets of Albus Dumbledore as J.K. Rowling reveals this very different time in his life."

While J.K. Rowling revealed the character was gay, Dumbledore's sexuality was never discussed in the films or novels. With Law playing a young Albus, though, it might the first chance we get to see him have a love life—though perhaps not a successful one.

"Dumbledore fell in love with Grindelwald, and that that added to his horror when Grindelwald showed himself to be what he was," Rowling said in 2007. "To an extent, do we say it excused Dumbledore a little more because falling in love can blind us to an extent?... He was very drawn to this brilliant person, and horribly, terribly let down by him."

Arriving in theaters on November 16, 2018, Fantastic Beasts 2 is set "in an increasingly dark time for the wizarding world, where Newt Scamander and company have to decide on their allegiances," writes Variety.
