The Mississippi Supreme Court has ruled that a lesbian has the same parental rights to her son as her ex-wife, the child's biological mother.

Christina "Chris" Strickland had appealed a lower court ruling that the anonymous sperm donor who helped her ex, Kimberly Day, conceive was 6-year-old son Zayden's other parent. But on Thursday, the justices upheld Strickland's custody rights, a landmark ruling that puts same-sex married couples on the same level as heterosexual ones.

The nine-judge panel stated the lower court's ruling would set an unfair precedent for Mississippians who want to conceive children via IVF.

"For one, it would elevate the rights of a donor—who is a complete stranger to the child, and likely never will be identified—over the rights of a person who has known and cared for the child," Justice David Ishee wrote. "To deny Christina the relationship she has built with [Zayden] would be a miscarriage of justice."

They also argued that if Day had sole custody and died, Zayden would be come a ward of the state and could be put up for adoption.

Strickland told WREG Memphis that she's "on Cloud Nine."

"I knew I was my son’s mother from the start and I would be at the end, and this just confirms it with the Supreme Court backing me 100%."

She is now hoping to gain 50/50 custody of Zayden.
