Julianne Moore Reveals Why She Got “Fired” From “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”

The Oscar winner admits it's still too "painful" to watch the film.

Can you ever forgive Nicole Holofcener?

According to Julianne Moore, one of the world's most celebrated actors, Holofcener literally fired her from Can You Ever Forgive Me?

Promoting her new film Gloria Bell this week on Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live, the Oscar winner responded to a caller who asked why she had exited Can You Ever Forgive Me? during pre-production.

Moore was set to star in the “homo-saturated” biopic as lesbian writer and literary forger Lee Israel, a role that ultimately earned Melissa McCarthy her second Oscar nomination.

“I didn’t leave that movie, I was fired. Yeah, yeah, Nicole fired me," Moore said, referencing the Oscar-nominated screenwriter and the film's original director. "Yeah, that’s the truth."

“I think she didn’t like what I was doing," Moore explained. "I think that her idea of where the character was was different than where my idea of the character was, and so she fired me!”

"The only other time I was fired was when I was working at a yogurt stand when I was 15. So, yeah, it felt bad."

Has Moore seen the film? “I haven’t yet, because it’s still kind of painful,” she admitted. “I love Melissa McCarthy, I worship her, I think she’s fantastic, so I’m sure she’s great!”

Holofcener told IndieWire last year that Moore had left the film six days before production was scheduled to begin, which temporarily stalled the project. "It was traumatic," she said.
