Justin Vivian Bond's Ode To Gay Hookers, "Golden Age Of Hustlers" : WATCH

Cabaret icon Justin Vivian Bond has remade the queer classic, "Golden Age of Hustlers" for a new generation. Written by San Franciscan chanteuse Bambi Lake, the tune recalls the halcyon, pre-AIDS days of Cisco in the 1970s and the compelling personalities of that bygone era.

Co-directed by Silas Howard and Erin Greenwell, the video was crowdfunded through Kickstarter and features still projections from San Fran's queer history. Also present are trans icon Kate Bornstein and a cadre of club kids and performers serving fierceness to the gods.

According to Howard, in an interview with the Huffington Post, Lake's song stops short of "romanticizing the era" and instead honors "the loss of many in a community living on the edge of social acceptance." The video also serves as a testament to trans and queer visibility, with Greenwell noting how "few and far between" these communities are represented in art.
