Kandy Muse on Her Original Exit Line and Being the "Producer" of Season 13

"You can't deny the fact that when you're watching me on TV, you are 100% entertained."

Kandalicious Muse has gone from sitting alone in the VIP to being in the final four of RuPaul's Drag Race Season 13.

As the New York nightlife darling said in her confessional, "Everyone can be a drag queen, but not everyone can be a star... I'm a star!" And no matter what you thought of Kandy — we're looking at you, Tamisha Iman — you have to agree that she is a star and makes for good TV.

Like how Kandy had eyes for Joey Jay, Drag Race fans fell in love with Ms. Muse. In addition to creating some drama backstage, Kandy brought memorable looks to the runway week after week. With her Beyoncé-inspired Yellow Gorgeous ensemble and her Nice Girls Roast fashion moment, she left the judges gagged, while some looks, like her BEAST couture and Haute Pocket, were boots from the panel.

Since Kandy was the "producer" of Season 13, it makes sense that she created some iconic moments for herself — including almost coming to blows with Tamisha on Untucked and when Ru asked her to stay to slay another day after Kandy's lip-sync against Symone.

Kandy spoke with NewNowNext about her undying love for Joey, the pressure of representing the House of Aja, and what her exit line was going to be if Ru really had asked her to sashay away from the competition.

Okay Kandy, I have to know — what's the latest with Joey Jay? Are you two talking? Is there love in the air?

Listen, after the season was done and over and wrapped and filmed, me and Joey tried a few things and we would travel back and forth, but we are just two very busy queens. We live in two completely different states. And unfortunately, it's just, it's not going to work the way I want it to work. But, doesn't mean that any time we're around each other and drunk, you know...

Girl, I get it. Joey's cute.

So cute.

So, you're the third queen from House of Aja to make it onto the series. Were you feeling the pressure?

There was definitely a lot of pressure just because you want to surpass where your sisters placed on their seasons. And especially because you also want to make sure that you make it far enough that they're so happy and proud of you. Obviously, I think I achieved that one. But yeah, there was a lot of pressure because Aja, maybe she didn't do so well, but then she came back for All Stars and slayed it. And then Dahlia went home first on her season. So there was just a lot of mixed emotions.

How are you and Aja these days?

Me and Aja are really good. We actually had a phone conversation a few weeks ago, just catching up and making amends. We weren't talking for awhile, but friends fall out all the time and then friends rekindle, and it's just life. It's the way life happens. And we're really good. She actually just texted me as we're talking, so that's funny.

But how about you and Tamisha? Have you two spoken?

I haven't spoken to Tamisha since we wrapped filming, but I don't hold any grudges against her. I don't have any negativity or negative feeling towards her. We made iconic television, clearly, we're nominated for an MTV Movie award for it, so...

Another iconic moment was when Ru called you back and told you to stay after that lip-sync. What was that moment like?

Honestly, that was so wild because once me and Symone finished our lip sync, I had prepared myself to be eliminated. I was like, okay, whatever. It's done, like it is what it is. It's the end of the ride. I'm sad, but you know what? I'm going to leave with my head held high. So when RuPaul called me, I swore she was going to be like, "Kandy, you're in front of my camera, please move." But that wasn't the case. She kept me there, and that really just lit something in me because it just told me that she sees something in me that I need to see in myself, and that I have to bring to the competition. And that's exactly what I did. I don't think that there was ever a week on Drag Race that I wasn't fighting to get to the next episode.

Did you have an exit line prepared?

Oh yeah, absolutely. I was going to get to the end of the stage, then I was going to look at RuPaul and say, "RuPaul, I'm going to catch your ass in the parking lot." And then I was going to walk off.

What was it like preparing for the finale?

Preparing for this finale was definitely... it was interesting because it truly is going to be one of the best finales in Drag Race history. And enough finale, trust me. But preparing for it, going into these finales, you've seen the girls lip-sync for the crown before, you've seen every girl bring a billion and one reveals, so you're like, okay, how can I outdo myself without doing too much? And there's so much because we can be perfect throughout the season and then get to the finale and fuck it up, and then that's what people are going to remember you for. So it is a lot of pressure going into a finale.

But you're proud of what you did on the finale? No regrets?

I don't regret anything that I've done in the entire season.

How do you feel about being called the "producer" of the season?

It's correct. To call me the producer, or the main character, or the editor... call me everything. I'm not going to lie to you, I went into Drag Race and definitely produced myself because I just feel like at this point, we have to be smart about what we do on the show. I knew we were filming a show. At the end of the day, we're in a competition, but we're also filming the show. And I said, baby, if I don't win anything, I'm going make the best out of this experience.

Well, I feel people can have their opinions about you, but I think everyone can agree that you are good TV.

People definitely have a lot of opinions about me. Yeah, you can't deny the fact that when you're watching me on TV, you are 100% entertained.

Thinking back to filming, do you have a favorite moment or a moment that encapsulates your time on Drag Race?

There were so many moments on the show that I really, really love. Like when me, Mik, and Tina were just running around the set, running away from a bug — it was just one of the funniest moments. But the entire experience, it will for sure live in my heart. From the very beginning up until the very end. I will cherish it. I have it tattooed on me, so I have no reason but to cherish the season.

What's the tattoo?

Well, one, it's a portrait of me because I'm all delusional, I love myself. And then right next to it, it's a 13 for Season 13.

Oh, I love that. Did any of the other girls get a 13 tattoo?

Yeah, Joey got it. And then I think a lot of the girls are going to wait until we're all together so they can all get that at the same time.

I just love your friendship with Gottmik. What does your friendship with Mik mean to you?

Oh my God. I love Mik. Every time I'm in L.A., I stay at her place. We connected so quick and so fast on the show, and it's so weird because we are two complete opposites from each other. But I just love her artistry, the way she goes about things in life. And we just clicked so well. I don't know. I also, anytime that I need anything in the workroom, I would run over to Mik's station and be like, "I need hair, I need jewelry." And I'll just take it and there were no questions asked, because that's Mik. Doesn't give a shit about anything. So I love that.

Do you have a favorite look that you wore from the season?

Honestly, here's the thing: People can like some and hate some, but what they cannot deny is the fact that I have been one of the first big girls to go on that show and try different silhouettes every single week. You can't compare one of my looks to the other because you just can't. One of my favorite looks, I love my yellow, my beads, my little black dress... there are so many that I love. But if I have to pick one, it's definitely my beads because it just looked so high fashion and so rich and so sexy.

Where's that pocket dress now?

Oh baby, let me tell you something. That is in my closet amongst everything that I have worn on Drag Race. I'm trying to figure out what I want to do with it. People have offered to buy it off me. I just don't know why people want to buy that. Well, it is an iconic piece of fashion now. So yeah, we'll see. Maybe we'll put it up in a museum.

I feel like I've been sitting alone in the VIP all year in this quarantine and lockdown. Please tell me you're not going to be alone in the VIP this summer?

Oh no, no, no. This summer, I am a fully vaccinated doll. I do not want to be alone anymore. Quarantining for Drag Race and then being quarantined at home? Like, I am done being alone.

Do you have plans to see any of your fellow New York Drag Race sisters, like Rosé or Tina?

Oh, absolutely. After the finale, we are all going to party really hard.

I'm going to miss watching you every week on Drag Race. Can you tease or talk about any projects coming up?

Listen, I am also going to miss seeing myself on TV every Friday. There's definitely more television in the works. I just wanted to do more TV work, and there are the tours and there is so much happening.

So, Kandy Muse will be producing more television?

Oh baby, absolutely.
