A transgender man in Western New York was stabbed to death early Monday morning, reportedly by his female parter.
Kashmire Redd, 28, of Gates, New York, stumbled out of his apartment building and collapsed on the front lawn. He was taken to the hospital by police but succumbed to shortly thereafter.
Authorities believe Redd was repeatedly stabbed by his girlfriend, Doris Carrasquillo, after a domestic dispute. Carrasquillo, 40, has been charged with murder but pleaded not guilty, according to the Democrat & Chronicle.
Redd’s murder marks the 19th reported homicide of a transgender person in America this year.
“It is dangerous enough to flee a domestic violence relationship in a [cisgender and] heterosexual relationship, with many financial, emotional, and physical safety barriers in the mix,” said Jaime Saunders, president of the Willow Domestic Violence Center.
“Yet 30 to 50% of transgender people experience intimate-partner violence at some point in their lifetime, compared to 28 to 33% of the general population.”
