How “The X-Files” Made Kate McKinnon Gay

Hint: It wasn't Flukeman.

The hugely popular ’90s sci-fi series The X-Files might have turned many viewers into UFO believers or conspiracy theorists, but what about turning them gay? Well, that’s what it did to Kate McKinnon.

The Ghostbusters star has always been vocal about her love for The X-Files and its star Gillian Anderson—even posting a photo of her dressed up as Anderson’s character, Dana Scully for Halloween when she was younger:

Back in 2008, McKinnon sat down with her Big Gay Sketch Show co-star Julie Goldman for Goldman’s Celesbian Interviews series where she asked McKinnon when she knew she was gay:

“I figured it out by watching The X-Files and by noticing my physiological reaction to it. I thought at first my physiological reaction was a product of David Duchovny’s face but no, it was Gillian Anderson-who still is the queen of my heart. So I knew then.”

After she realized she had a crush on Scully, McKinnon came out to her friends and family.

Who knew that Mulder and Scully chasing little green men would have such an impact on young lives?

I write about drag queens. Dolly Parton once ruffled my hair and said I was "just the cutest thing ever."
