Kathy Griffin’s Mother Maggie Passes Away at 99

"I am gutted. She was my best friend. She was my family."

Kathy Griffin’s mother, Maggie Griffin, died March 17 at the age of 99. The comedian announced her mother’s passing on her social media accounts.

“I am gutted,” Kathy wrote. “She was my best friend. She was my family. You knew her. She appreciated you guys so much.” Kathy revealed in January 2019 that her mother had “rapidly fallen into the throes of dementia.”

Many of Kathy’s celebrity friends responded on social media with words of condolences. “What a beautiful relationship the two of you share,” Ross Mathews commented. “I wish that connection for everyone.”

Maggie became a star in her own right when she regularly appeared on Kathy’s Emmy-winning series My Life on the D-List. Maggie even released a book in honor of her love for boxed wine, Tip It!, and she was a frequent guest on Kathy’s eponymous Bravo talk show.

“What I am most proud of when I comes to My Life On The D-List is that show gave me the opportunity to show the world how naturally funny my parents were,” Kathy wrote on Twitter. “When people tell me they feel like they know my mom, I always respond ’you do!’ She never put on a show, she was the show.”

Maggie’s husband, John, passed away in 2007 at the age of 90.

I write about drag queens. Dolly Parton once ruffled my hair and said I was "just the cutest thing ever."
