The Story About The Boy Assaulted For Wearing Pink Headband Was Probably Fake

Screen Shot 2013-08-06 at 8.48.40 PMWe were as upset as you when we heard that news that a toddler was assaulted  by a bigot who took offense to his wearing a pink headband, his favorite accessory, in a Florida Walmart.

According to reports, after shouting "THAT'S a BOY?!," the assailant grabbed the headband off of 2-year-old Dexter's head and bopped him on the side of his head, declaring "You'll thank me later, little man!"

Dexter's mom, A Mother Thing blogger Katie Vyktoriah, said she told the man, "If you touch my son again, I will cut your damn hands off."

His alleged reply:

The guy snarled at me, looked at Dexter with disgust and said, "Your son is a fucking faggot." He then started sauntering out, but not before he threw over his shoulder, "He'll get shot for it one day."

I stood there, shaking, fists clenched, waiting for the man to disappear out the door, and then I fell apart. I was shaking so hard, holding back tears and comforting Dexter.

Vyktoriah—real name Katie Carpenter—said no one, customer or staffer, interfered in the incident.

Screen Shot 2013-08-06 at 8.54.45 PMNews sources including MSN, Gawker HuffPo and the Daily Mail   blasted the news across the Internet, but now concerns are being raised that the whole thing was made up by Carpenter.

One Charleston City Paper writer wondered why Carpenter never pursued the matter: “Actually, Vyktoriah could file a report with the police, they could ask Walmart for surveillance footage of both the incident and the parking lot where the man presumably parked his car, and ultimately, the man could be arrested for, you know, assaulting a two-year-old."

Also puzzling is that Walmart never issued an apology or any statement. (They might now, in the wake of skepticism about the assault.)

And then there's the fact that Katie has spun some pretty tall tales: Get Off My Internet reports that, though her site was taken down—allegedly crashing because of too much traffic after her "revelation—Vyktoriah/Carpenter had previously claimed on itto have been kidnapped once and survived three other attempts. She also stated  she was meant to be on one of the 9/11 flights, and was on a train that crashed.

On the medical front, Carpenter has told readers of her blog that she suffered from Celiac disease, diabetes, lactose intolerance, BPD, manic depression and ADHD.

When asked about how truthful she is on her blog, Carpenter punted:

And yes, much of that list was tongue in cheek to drag out some of my sillier stories into much bigger dramas than they were. When I wrote it more than a year ago, I drew people’s attention to it as a FUNNY (though accurate) representation of some of the stuff I’ve been through in my life.

Well, authorities didn't think it was "funny": Carpenter has now been taken in by the sheriff's department for psychiatric evaluation.
