Keira Knightley: My Teachers Told Me Being Gay Was "Disgusting"

Keira Knightley, soon to be seen along with Benedict Cumberbatch in the Alan Turing biopic The Imitation Game, talked to Vulture about the time she went to prom with a girl.

Her date was a model friend, Emily, and it seems the two had a blast—until it was time to snap their prom picture.

"Emily was a model and had been in Paris shooting something, and she turned up as the boy. So she had a black tie with ripped jeans on, and everybody else was completely dressed up, obviously, in that kind of finery.

Then we had our picture taken underneath the [canopy], and she’s kissing me, and we were told that that was disgusting. One of the teachers took us both aside and said we were never going to come to anything if we didn’t know how to dress appropriately for events like that.

So that was my prom. We had a great time!"

Knightley, 29,  got a little taste of the sort of discrimination many LGBT people face on a daily basis. Those ranks include Turing, who was chemically castrated—and ultimately commited suicide—after being found guilty of propositioning an undercover officer for sex.

Some have criticized The Imitation Game for downplaying Turing's sexuality in favor of his relationship with fellow code-beaker Joan Clarke (Knightly). Turing proposed to Clarke but after admitting he was gay, ended their relationship.

The Imitation Game hit theaters on November 21.
