New Keith Haring Exhibit In San Francisco Walks "The Political Line"

While we associate Keith Haring with almost a child-like energy, his work was highly political—addressing Apartheid, homophobia, the Arms Race, the environment and the AIDS crisis. "Keith Haring: The Political Line", now on view at San Francisco's de Young museum, explores Haring's social activism head-on.

Featuring more than 130 works— including large-scale paintings, sculptures and subway drawings—"Political Line" is the first major Haring exhibition on the West Coast in nearly two decades. Several pieces have not been on view since he passed away from AIDS-related illness in 1990. And yet, many of the issues he confronted are as relevant today as they were in the 1980s.

"Haring understood that art was for everybody—he fought for the individual and against dictatorship, racism, and capitalism," says curator Dieter Buchhart. "He was no utopian, but he had a dream that ‘nothing is an end, because it always can be the basis for something new and different.'"

Below, check out several pieces from the exhibition.

"Keith Haring: The Political Line" is on view at San Francisco's de Young museum through February 16.
