Pause Doomscrolling and Watch Kelly Clarkson’s Moving Kacey Musgraves Cover

"There's always been a rainbow hangin' over your head..."

We know it’s been hard to breakaway from Twitter what with this week’s terrifying/depressing news cycle, but stop doomscrolling for two minutes to practice some self-care with Kelly Clarkson.

On the latest Kellyoke, Clarkson’s popular cover segment from her talk show, the hostess covers “Rainbow,” the emotional closing track off Kacey Musgraves’ 2018 Grammy-winning album masterpiece, Golden Hour.

With lyrics like “When it rains, it pours / But you didn’t even notice it ain’t rainin’ anymore / It’s hard to breathe when all you know is / The struggle of stayin’ above the risin’ water line,” the moving song is even more comforting after this week’s violent insurrection at the Capitol. And of course, Clarkson slays it.

As NewNowNext has previously reported, aside from being a fierce musician, Musgraves is also a vocal ally to the LGBTQ community, with her song “Follow Your Arrow” becoming an anthem for many of her queer fans. She also delivered “High Horse,” a country-disco track which Gay Twitter™ deemed the Song of Summer back in 2018. Musgraves even sashayed down the runway as a guest judge on Season 3 of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars. Her latest collaboration was with out indie-pop singer Troye Sivan on a new version of his track “Easy.”

Listen to Clarkson’s cover of “Rainbow” in the video below. Even though she doesn’t end it with Musgraves’ original closing line reassuring listeners that “it’ll all be alright,” we are even more convinced that it will be after watching this performance.

I write about drag queens. Dolly Parton once ruffled my hair and said I was "just the cutest thing ever."
