Kelly Clarkson Wants To Star In A Broadway Revival Of "Funny Girl"
Don't tell her just to sit and putter—pop star Kelly Clarkson wants to star in a Broadway revival of Funny Girl, the musical that made Barbra Streisand a legend. (Well, more of one anyway.)
Talking to Entertainment Weekly, Clarkson revealed her dream to get onto the Great White Way. "I would love to do something brand-new. I think it would be exciting to create a role. And maybe that's because the musical I would want to revive is Funny Girl."
The "Heart Beat Song" singer admits Streisand is "a hard act to follow" but says "I just relate to that character, and I've loved it since I was a little girl. I've always kind of been that awkward girl that stood out - in not such a great way sometimes."
Based loosely on the life of entertainer Fanny Brice, Funny Girl debuted on Broadway in 1964 with a book by Isobel Lennart, music by Jule Styne, and lyrics by Bob Merrill. In 2011, Six Feet Under star Lauren Ambrose was tapped to star in a revival that ultimately never materialized.
Lea Michele's character, Rachel, was cast in a production on Glee, a plot point some fans were hoping would turn into a real-world reality. (Michele sang "Don't Rain on My Parade" during the 2010 Tonys.) Now with Lady Gaga slaying The Sound of Music at the Oscars, some are saying Mother Monster should play Fanny.
Do you think Kelly would be good for the part?
