Politicians in Kenya have proposed a new law that would make homosexuality punishable by life imprisonment and death by stoning. The Republican Liberty Party presented its Anti-Homosexuality Bill this week, which would prohibit any form of sexual relations between people of the same sex. The legislation is now being deliberated on by Justice and Legal Affairs committee.

Nicknamed the "Stone the Gays" Bill, the measure mandates those guilty of sodomy would face life imprisonment, but any foreigner who commits a same-sex act would be subject to death by stoning in public. A death sentence would also be carried out on anyone found guilty of "aggravated homosexuality"—serial offenders, HIV-positive people, sex with minors, and sex where the "victim" is disabled.  Gay brothels are also targeted in the measure, with operators facing life in prison.

“There is need to protect children and youth who are vulnerable to sexual abuse and deviation as a result of cultural changes, uncensored information technology, parentless child developmental settings and increasing attempts by homosexuals to raise children in homosexual relationships through adoption, foster care or otherwise,” the petition states.

Last month, 60 people were arrested at a Nairobi nightclub on grounds of "suspected homosexuality.

The Board initially removed the book from its summer reading list for incoming freshmen after receiving complaints from parents, allegedly because of profanity in the book. But author Emily M. Danforth believes its because of the subject matter.

In an open letter to the school board, Danforth wrote:

Several of the other books on the Blue Hen list also include instances of what you refer to as "inappropriate language." Perhaps The Miseducation of Cameron Post has a greater number of these instances than some of those other books, but unless you're prepared to offer a specific number of "allowable" curse/swear words per book on the list (which seems a poor idea, indeed), then your claim that my book was removed "solely" for its objectionable language seems patently dishonest.

Our sister site AfterEllen launched a campaign protesting that decision—which was made without proper investigation and in violation of the Board's own rules—so administrators decided the only logical response was to cancel the list altogether.
