The Justice Department has a new spokesperson, Kerri Kupec—and her previous job was at the anti-LGBTQ conservative group, Alliance Defending Freedom.

Kupec has been named the DOJ's director the Office of Public Affairs, but during her tenure at ADF she was "responsible for East Coast and Supreme Court media operations." NewNowNext has reported on ADF before, including earlier this year when it represented Colorado baker Jack Phillips in his U.S. Supreme Court case, in which he argued his First Amendment rights would be violated if he were made to make a cake for a same-sex wedding. The Trump administration backed Phillips, and the president shared that he was pleased when the baker won his case, in a narrow ruling.

Alliance Defending Freedom is also playing a pivotal role in helping the Supreme Court roll back LGBTQ rights. In another filing, the group asked for a reversal of a federal appeals court’s ruling that a school in Philadelphia was not violating the rights of cisgender students by allowing trans students to occupy public accommodations based on their identity.

According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, ADF was: “Founded by some 30 leaders of the Christian Right, the Alliance Defending Freedom is a legal advocacy and training group that has supported the recriminalization of homosexuality in the U.S. and criminalization abroad; has defended state-sanctioned sterilization of trans people abroad; has linked homosexuality to pedophilia and claims that a “homosexual agenda” will destroy Christianity and society."

Kupec is replacing Sarah Isgur Flores at the Justice Department, who is now Deputy Attorney General Ro Rosenstein's office. According to The Daily Beast, Kupec also "spent time at the White House helping with Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the Supreme Court."

Kupec had been at ADF since 2014.
