Days after being accused of sexually assaulting a teenage Anthony Rapp in the 1980s, actor Kevin Spacey has announced he is stepping away from acting. A rep for the actor told E! "Kevin Spacey is taking the time necessary to seek evaluation and treatment. No other information is available at this time."

A Buzzfeed interview with Rapp detailing an alleged 1986 encounter surfaced Sunday evening. Shortly thereafter, Spacey posted a lengthy statement on Twitter that many felt only made matters worse.

"I have a lot of respect and admiration for Anthony Rapp as an actor," the Oscar winner wrote. "I am beyond horrified to hear his story. I honestly do not remember the encounter as it would have been over 30 years ago. But if I did behave then as he describes I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior and I am sorry for the feelings he described having carried with him all these years."

He went on to disclose that, "I have loved and had romantic encounters with men throughout my life, and I choose now to live as a gay man."

Critics slammed him for conflating the sexual exploitation of a minor with coming out as gay: "A highly publicized moment like this, in which deception born of self-preservation gets jumbled up with alleged misconduct, casts doubt on the integrity of the whole community," wrote NewNowNext's Naveen Kumar.

Within days, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced it was rescinding Spacey's previously announced International Emmy Founders Award, and Netflix revealed it was halting production on a sixth and final season of House of Cards.

According to IMDB, Spacey has a number of projects already in post-production, including All the Money in the World and Billionaire Boys Club, the upcoming Gore Vidal biopic Gore, and the fifth season of House of Cards. He most recently appeared in the critically acclaimed action film Baby Driver.
