Know Your Instagrammer: All The Others

"I grew up with a very conflicted relationship with my own body and this has given me a place to celebrate sexuality and physicality."

This week's Know Your Instagrammer is G****** H*******.

You'll notice the omission of a name there because All The Others (his social media moniker) has an identity largely built around his anonymity.

The "project," as he refers to his work, is rooted in obscuring identity.

Originally from Los Angeles, All The Others studies costume and scenic design in school. Today, he runs a design studio with his partner (who appears in many of his images).

"All The Others started as a way for me to explore body image issues by creating documents that dispute my perception of self. Its turned into a place to explore the body relating to spaces and objects. I grew up with a very conflicted relationship with my own body and this has given me a place to celebrate sexuality and physicality in a way that is unashamed and integrated into my visual landscape."

Below, we chat with All The Others/@all_the_others_.

NewNowNext: What is the biggest difference between yourself and @all_the_others_? Is there one?

All The Others: @all_the_others_ is kind of my heightened aesthetic fantasy. We inhabit the same world, but the images allow me to create moments that feel a little above and beyond.

Why do you choose to remain anonymous?

I'm trying to create images that are less about a direct relationship with the viewer. I'm more interested in capturing my relationship to an environment than I am in addressing the camera. Addressing the camera is a very difficult thing to do. I’m also intrigued by the masks we wear in life. I don’t always wear one, but a mask in an image creates a narrative ambiguity that I find interesting.

Why did you choose the pseudonym All The Others?

I connect with the word other. It can imply separateness or exclusion, but also possibility and choice.

Describe your Instagram aesthetic.

I’m most invested in composition and color and like to create images that feel just ever-so-slightly hyper real. My approach is generally tonal when its not black and white.

Why do you use Instagram?

At its best, Instagram is a place to share and consume images. I’m voracious, so the never ending stream of images is like an IV drip for me.

In what ways, if at all, is Instagram harmful to you (or others)?

I think its possible to take it all too seriously and turn Instagram into “Validate Me” machine. Conversely, what I appreciate about the interface is that you get to select the kinds of images you want to interact with, so its possible to connect to a community of like minded people.

Do ’likes’ matter to you?

I’d be lying if I said it doesn’t feel good to know that an image you’ve posted is liked by a lot of people, but honestly some of my favorite images get the fewest likes.

What kind of Instagrammer do you enjoy following?

Its funny because my own instagram is so controlled, but I really like profiles that offer an artful peak into someone’s life. I like seeing faces. Go figure.

Tell us one person who’s using Instagram in a creative way.

@losientomiamor is a big favorite. He posts found images in an order that creates a beautiful color gradient. I’m a sucker for a tight color story.

What do you do when you’re not on Instagram?

I’m Creative Director of a design studio that I co-founded with my partner. We started making things we wanted to live with when we first moved in together, and 5 years later we have a large team making lighting fixtures, objects and furniture.
