Kristen Kelly Is Mad, Drunk, And Singing

After you read the next line, I want you to you close your eyes and imagine a story about it.

I got an ex-old man and an ex-best girlfriend

It's just delicious, right? That one line suggests a really evocative story. It makes me imagine the night my girl rolled into her house and found her husband curled up on the couch with her best friend. Right there under the afghan she bought at Pier One! And they were making out in front of the TV, and Army Wives was on, and he never watched that show with her, even though he knew it was her favorite! Now she'd better grab a beer and kick both of their sorry asses out of her house.

That's the kind of storytelling magic you get in "Ex-Old Man," the debut single from Kristen Kelly. It's a blues-rock-country jam that gives you just enough detail to pain the rest of the picture yourself.

And it just gets better after that first line. "Gotta damn good reason for this drink in my hand," Kelly tells us, and I know my girl is right. She's drunk, she's pissed, and she's letting everybody know. Oh, and you eventually find out that he was getting with her friend while Kristen was busy working two jobs. To support his ungrateful ass! That scumbag!

I don't know, y'all... this song just gives me so much joy. It's got a perfect blues-rock structure, sort of like "Give Me On Reason" by Tracy Chapman, that gets my toe tapping out of my boot. It's sung really well, and like I said, it's clever enough to suggest an entire story. If this is any indication of her talent, then I'd say Kristen Kelly is about to be a huge star.
