K-Stew fans, get ready: The out actress could be starring as a lesbian character in Happiest Season, a new holiday-themed romantic comedy from TriStar Pictures.
The film follows a young woman whose plans to propose to her girlfriend at a holiday get-together are squandered when she learns her GF isn’t even out to her family yet. TriStar acquired the rights to the flick earlier this year, reports Variety, and fellow out actress Clea DuVall is one-half of the writing team (and slated to direct the film.) Stewart is reportedly the top contender for the lead character.
It would be the latest gay role for Stewart, who formally confirmed rumors about her sexuality in 2016: Earlier this year, she played the lesbian love interest of Lizzie Borden (Chloë Sevigny) in Lizzie, a biopic about the famed 19th century murder suspect of the same name.
The news also comes months after box office hit Love, Simon broke major ground for LGBTQ representation in mainstream rom-coms.
And Happiest Season won’t be the only lesbian holiday rom-com making a splash this season: Lez Bomb, another queer holiday film, stars writer-director Jenna Laurenzo as Lauren, a closeted woman who plans to drop the “lez bomb” to her fam in New Jersey over Thanksgiving break. More queer-inclusive love stories on the big screen, please!
