The L Word premiered 15 years ago this month on Showtime—and to celebrate the anniversary the girls are returning for seconds.

During the Showtime presentation at this week's TCA Winter Press Tour, it was announced that The L Word sequel is officially happening.

“Marja-Lewis Ryan [L Word revival executive producer and showrunner] has brought her unique and contemporary vision to The L Word and blended it beautifully into the fabric of Ilene’s groundbreaking series,” said Gary Levine, President of Entertainment, Showtime Networks. “This revered show was both entertaining and impactful when it originally ran on Showtime, and we are confident that our new version will do that and more in 2019.”

Series creator Ilene Chaiken will return as also executive producer, along with Jennifer Beals, Katherine Moennig and Leisha Hailey, who are expected to reprise their roles from the original series.

According to the press release, The L Word will consist of eight episodes, and will premiere later this year. It will feature the original returning characters who will star ""alongside a new generation of self-possessed LGBTQIA characters experiencing love, heartbreak, sex, setbacks, and success in L.A."

A revival of The L Word has been hinted at for at least two years when Chaiken and Levine spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about her desire to bring the series back.

“I feel like it really has been a giant gap in terms of lesbian series since The L Word went off the air. I don’t think there’s been quite as big a gap in terms of gay male characters and series in television,” Levine said. “The L Word was a seminal series and there’s been nothing like it so maybe it’s time to try it anew. That’s why we’re pursuing it.”
