OUT magazine held its 15th annual OUT 100 Awards Friday night, and while the evening at Gotham Hall was a glam, drunken, power-gay affair to be sure, we hadn’t see nothin’ till Patti Labelle came to the party stage … after three hours of open bar and after Nikka Costa destroyed everyone’s eardrums. So let’s say it would take someone like Patti to get the gays’ attention at this point.
And it wasn’t just Patti: Nona Hendryx and Sarah Dash of the original Labelle joined in for the group’s first performance together in 30 years! Patti even teared up at one point … and then – I thought this was kind of weird – Wilson Cruz got on stage and started singing, "singing," "Lady Marmalade" with them – definitely fulfilling some kind of lifelong dream, but not necessarily enjoyable for everyone else.
Check after the jump for lots of glamor-gay pictures – like this one of winner Cheyenne Jackson, who was all cute and gracious – and my overall take on the evening’s festivities, which included host Chelsea Handler, an OMFGPadma! moment and the magic of Katy Perry via satellite.
And now for lots of screeching, big-haired Labelle pics … Could they have asked for a better audience after 30 years?
This is my one picture of Labelle … which is totally useless, I know. But I guess the explosion of light behind Patti is kind of appropriate?
And now for the party’s host: the fantastic Chelsea Handler. I basically live for Chelsea Lately weekday nights – and while Chelsea didn’t mingle or even get on stage as much as I would have liked, I do remember her telling me to "suck it" and warning that if I didn’t donate money to an HIV/AIDS charity, I wouldn’t get penetrated…
And here’s Chelsea with OUT editor-in-chief Aaron Hicklin.
I should say my Padma "moment" was just her presence at the event… I was taken aback! She’s totally gorgeous, no surprise.
And "Musician of The Year" – I know a lot of people have a problem with this – Katy Perry accepted her gay honor via satellite. (Follow that link to watch her "speech.") Katy lamented she could not be among her gays, enjoying all the "cocktails and gossip" … kind of awkward, but I’m still a Katy fan.
New-found dancer singer and gay favorite Michelle Williams intro-ed Labelle and presented Cheyenne Jackson with his OUT award – recalling their work together in Aida … and then Cheyenne slipped her some tongue.
Self-proclaimed fag hag and Brit rising star Adele also made a welcomed appearance.
And performers for the night included cute Aussie gay and "Black & Gold" singer Sam Sparro – along with funky-soul performer Nikka Costa.
Check out the OUT 100 blog for tons of pictures from the event … there’s plenty more, believe me!
Oh, I should probably mention that ultra-gay gift bag, shouldn’t I? Let’s see, there were condoms, lube, a Lady GaGa CD, a diet Pepsi, the Boys in The Band DVD and – for some reason – a pet health encyclopedia, among a few other goodies. I will say, my +1 got an $80 bottle of DSquared cologne, and I got jack-sh*t in that department. What the hell!
